An empty bin

Ok, so hubby and I have noticed a strange and very wonderful bonus since beginning our new frugalness and becoming a veggie household - our bin is nearly empty.

I have always been aware of how much we throw away, and have tried to reduce it, but we could still manage to fill a wheelie bin every 2 weeks - sometimes having to chuck a bag in our lovely neighbour's bin, when our lid wouldn't close.

Then today I realised that the bag in our kitchen bin is the same bag from last Friday, and it is not even close to being full.  Our wheelie bin is still completely empty.  And to be honest, I don't know how.   The recycling bin is also nearly empty.

What are we no longer throwing away?

Is is just that we are no longer buying 'stuff'?

I don't know, but I am very pleased about it!

  1. We have very little that actually gets to the bins, probably just as well as our "bin" is a communal dumpster a mile and a half down the lane. The dog and the chickens get any food scraps, anything they don't eat goes to the worm composter, peelings, tea bags, shredded paper etc into the compost bins, chickens get egg shells, cardboard goes on the fire, bottles to the recycling bank, etc. Mostly what ends up in the actual bin is an odd tin can or plastic item, although I do try and keep bought packaging down where possible.
Sounds like you are doing well with your reducing waste, keep up the good work :)

    1. I think a bin a mile and a half away would ertainly put me off throwing anything away!

  2. Well done on all that reduced waste, at least things are getting used up! I wish we could cut down on food waste, i'm terrible for buying food and forgetting to eat it before it's too late, although am getting better these days.

  3. What a great feeling. Sounds like you are a great team and doing brilliantly. Can't wait to hear more about your success!

We don't throw any food away, it all seems to get used up.

The only thing that gets past us is LETTUCE! :) Which we only eat in the warmer weather.

  5. We are the same. If we have to bags of bin waste a week we are doing well. We could also not put our recycling bin out for maybe 2 months or so. Its amazing how a few changes make such a difference. Keep up the good work.

    1. I think it is a great list. I really shows what is important and what we are willing to work towards. You will never find 'Sit in an office for as long as possible' on a list ;)

Well done for reducing your waste.

I separate all my recyclables from the general bin into a basket in my kitchen. Then I sort them into the final council boxes outside. On a cold and rainy day the less the better!

  8. I think it is brilliant to get your hubby to agree to vegetarian isn. My chap will not eat anything unless it once went Moo or Cluck or Baa or Oink. I have to hide vegetables in his food as if he was a toddler.
It is amazing the correlation between what one brings into the house and then what thrown away.
    You must be so proud.
    Great Blog!
