A Magical Evening

My husband and I have begun a tradition of each year going to see Shakespeare at the open air theatre near Stamford.

This year was Twelfth Night.  I never studied Shakespeare at school and had never seen any plays, so I feel it is high time to make up for it, and it was just magical.
Tolethorpe Hall Grounds

The theater is set at Tolethorpe Hall and they have built the open air stage amongst the trees (the audience have the luxury of having a covered seating area).
It is just beautiful and there is something quite magical about watching the play as dusk falls and it gradually turns to evening, all the while hearing birds and seeing them fly over head.  Even watching a play in the rain seems to add a unique spin on it.

I am already looking forward to seeing next years performance.

  1. I saw the play in an open air venue about 18 yrs ago. Picnics on the lawn then the magic began...bats, fireflies and at one point a cat meandered through the set!
    Can't beat open air Shakespeare.

  3. We are lucky to have a theatre company based near us & although they travel all over the world, they still put shows on near to home & they are just brilliant!

Seeing a show on a warm summer's night is wonderful, though we don't have many of them these days...

  4. I studied Twelfth Night at school as a teenager , then again at college when I was 40. I was hopeful of seeing it performed outdoors sometime. It's on at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall this Summer - unfortunately it's being performed the week before we start our holiday down there.

  6. I thought I'd left a comment. But I realise now that I went off to look at the play on the website. Wish I could go too but the only date we have something else already arranged.

Twelfth Night is a play I've always wanted to see since I studied it for A Level.

    One day.....

  7. I do so love Shakespeare! Open air Shakespeare is even better and there really is something magical about it. Glad you had a great time and am glad the weather was good to help with the ambience!
